induction project

induction project : a promotional poster for the college.

Research for the poster

I started my research with looking at other promotional covers for colleges for inspiration.

I really like this cover for UCLA. I think that the colours are really eye-catching and i like how the artist has included lots of diversity in the people that they have drawn, making sure that many different people could relate to the the image. I like how all the colours are fairly dulled also, to make sure that the many different colours of t shirts do not clash. However from an informative point of view this poster is not great as there is no information about the college. From an artistic I like this
I really like this cover for multiple reasons. the first one being it shows the place where it is located (California). The second reason i like this cover is because of the design within  the state. It presents the people of California as a working system. this could attract people to come to the college. The colours on the magazine cover are very minimal yet very effective. they are bright and catch your eye without clashing together. The white writing also stands out against the blue as the dark would contrast with the light making the name of the college stand out the most within the image.

Why are UCLA posters so different ?

UCLA in California is known for its more creative programs such as the arts and  architecture. I really like how the university adapts to a more creative style when advertising as it would appeal to their audience a lot more.

I started looking for different kinds of covers. Ones with more information on them rather than having an artistic approach. The poster to the left has artistic elements to it, such as the graphic style writing yet is a lot more course specific and shows elements of the course on the cover.
i really like the informative aspect of this one but i also love the creativity within it too. I like the White outline around the black as it makes you focus on it ore and draws your eye to it.
One thing i would like to take from this is the larger title and then the smaller text underneath it i think this is very simple yet effective.

Similar to the one above it, the cover to the left has a lot of information  on it in comparison to the UCLA covers. I really like how The Y on the cover looks like it has been 3D printed as that is what the photo is showing. I also think its good that they've used a Y instead of a random of a random object as that also fits in with the Yale branding.

Instead of just looking at promotional college things i wanted to look at magazine covers and posters for other companies.

I really like the simplicity of this cover as i feel like any more writing would have made the cover look too busy and crammed as the background is crammed itself. I love the soft, muted coloured title as it compliments the soft colours on the photo. One thing i really like about this cover is that there is only one big bit of writing as it brings one main focus. one thing i don't like about it is the black writing within the title as i feel like it contrasts too much.

I really like how minimalistic that this magazine cover is and how the background is one block of colour. The white letters really stand out against the dark red and it is really eye catching. I like how there is writing at the bottom of the photo and not in the middle or down the sides as it does not get in the way of the focus of the magazine cover. I think this is something i would want to use in my magazine cover.

I love this cover of Vouge as there is a lot going on, yet i don't think that the images does not take away from the title. I really like the collage as it highlights multiple things on one cover . Though in the other examples i have used there has only been not to many colours on one cover, however i like hoe this one uses a lot of colours yet it does not look overwhelmingly colourful. i think in my poster i would like to have lots of colour and a basic colour (such as black or white) title.

Out of all the magazine covers that i have looked at for inspiration this is probably my favourite. I love the collage of all the different photos. It does not look too busy yet there is still a lot to look at.  Another thing i like about it is how there is a "mirror" on the cover too as this makes the buyer look like they are are also apart of it making them feel included. I don't like how it is in black and white, i like when there is a lot of colour on the cover. Another thing that i dont like about it is the big orange writing. It works on this magazine cover but I would not like to use that on mine.

Who is the demographic of sunderland colleges VPA building?

-People between the ages of 16-24 and from any background
-Creative people
-People who are interested in art, photography, textiles and the media.

My Idea

In my poster i would like to include the background similar to the Vouge one below. I would like to use photos with a lot of colour (like the UCLA cover) on them as i think that would be really eye-catching. I want to take photos of the art work already around the building as displaying some of the work from students in the collage could attract people who are aspiring to do similar courses.
For any font on the poster, i would like it to be very minimalistic, mirroring the UCLA cover. I would like to have sunderland college written accros the top of the poster so that it does not take away from all of the colours on the poster and distract from the art work

To mirror the vouge cover i did a 4x4 collage of photos of art found in the VPA building. I did this on photoshop. i really liked how it turned out.
However i wish i had taken more care as there were some little errors that i had made which i could not fix later as i had already flattened the image.
I was worries that some of the colour would look out of place and it woulld clash with each other but i tried to space some of the more colourful ones out a bit more and i think it helped it not to look too busy.

When adding the text i toned down the saturation and brightness as it helped add some more focus onto the text but didn't draw much attention away fro the art.
Though it was a really simple detail to make, i made turned up the transparancy of the text as when it was really bright and white the text looked really out of place and too obnoxious.

Peer Feedback:

Georgia: i like how colourful it is but some of the photos are uneven.

Katie:  The photoshop is mostly okay apart from some of the edges, i like how it includes art from the college.

Evaluation:
i really enjoyed doing this project as i have learned some photoshop skills after previously not knowing hoe to do this. One thing i would do better would be managing my time better and making sure all the little mistakes are gone.
